Ann Arbor Airport provides charter and private air services for business customers. Washtenaw County is 45 minutes west of the Port of Detroit, the busiest port serving the Great Lakes region. Detroit Metropolitan Airport
As of 2005, Detroit Metro was served by 19 major national and seven commuter airlines. In addition, three foreign, two cargo, and several charter airlines are based at the airport. Detroit Metropolitan Airport is conveniently located 10 miles from Washtenaw County's eastern line. The airport is ranked ninth in North American operations, sixth world's busiest airport in terms of operations, 17th in the world in number of passengers, and also handled 265,443 tons of cargo in 2001. The airport is served by every U.S. commercial carrier and is Northwest's largest hub, handling over 74% of passenger traffic. It runs more than 522,538 operations per year (takeoffs and landings), and has 100 non-stop direct destinations in the U.S. A record 35,187,517 million travelers passed through Detroit Metro in 2004. A new $1.2 billion mid-field terminal opened in December 2001. This expansion provides a new 94-gate, an additional runway, two, 200-passenger trams, and over 80 shops and restaurants.
