In addition, DRDA representatives provideproject development and contract negotiation and administration for U-Mfaculty members involved in projects funded by industrial organizations. 734.764.5500 www.research.umich.edu Engineering Office of Corporate Relations The office provides information and direction for small businessestrying to establish a relationship with the College of Engineeringthrough the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research. Research partnerships can be established with the students and facultyfrom the College of Engineering. Small businesses can become active instudent organizations. 734.647.7057 Great Lakes Trade Adjustment Assistance Center This center assists manufacturing firms in Michigan, Ohio, and Indianathat have been adversely affected by import competition. It also workswith eligible firms to analyze critical operations, develop a strategicadjustment plan for the firm, and help implement the plan. The centerpays 75% of the cost of the analysis and plan and about 50% ofimplementation costs. 734.998.6213 www.bus.umich.edu/research/biad/taac.html Technology Management Office Provides legal and business counsel to faculty and staff membersrelating to University generated intellectual properties, includingpatents, know-how, and software. Negotiates appropriate businessarrangements, such as licensing or assisting with the formation ofstart-up companies, to help develop and market University generatedintellectual properties. Publishes quarterly newsletter, Disclosure,featuring topics relevant to businesses such as technologies availablefor licensing, recently issued patents, and successful licensingarrangements. 734.763.0614 www.tmo.techtransfer.umich.edu Medical School Technology Transfer and Corporate Research This office is the main contact for businesses and other externalorganizations interested in commercialization of biomedicaltechnologies developed within the U of M Medical School. The officeassists medical school investigators with invention disclosures andother intellectual property matters and works in cooperation with the Uof M Technology Management Office and other U of M offices. 734.763.6363 www.med.techtransfer.umich.edu Office for Research on Industrial Facilities ORIF works to revitalize closed or abandoned manufacturing facilitiesby returning them to economically beneficial use. Faculty from theCollege of Engineering, School of Architecture, Urban Planning andother university departments form teams to assess facilities andrecommend their best use. ORIF is interested in preventing closure offacilities by identifying those at risk of closure and initiatingintervention activities to ensure viability. 734.998.6214 Office of Technology Transfer A service unit of the College of Engineering designed to fosterexplanation of existing companies and creation of new ones to promotegrowth and diversification of the Michigan economy. The officeoversees the Industrial Development Division, Industry Liaison andAssistance Office, and Innovation Center. 734.764.5260 www.techtransfer.umich.edu Industrial Development Division (IDD) An entrepreneurial program that focuses on technologies emerging fromlaboratories in the College of Engineering. Works in cooperation withthe U-M Office of Intellectual Property on disclosures, patents andlicenses. Also provides some direction to start-up companies. 734.764.5260 U-M Transportation Research Institute UMTRI provides a setting where its faculty, staff, and studentscollaborate to accomplish multidisciplinary transportation research,generating new basic knowledge and providing research training. Broadareas of research include crash-data collection and traffic-safetyanalysis, bioengineering, human factors, mechanical engineering,psychology, economics, public policy, and marine systems. In addition,numerous multidisciplinary research programs are currently beingconducted with other units of the University of Michigan. UMTRI’scollaborations also extend beyond the University to include workingwith state and federal agencies, urban and regional planners, labor andindustrial-relations groups, and corporate sponsors. 734.764.6504 www.umtri.umich.edu Industrial Affiliate Programs and Research Partnerships Businesses pay annual membership fees to support research of interestto them and gain accelerated access to results. Many departments atthe University of Michigan have Industrial Affiliate Programs.
